Marie-Hélène Gutberlet studied art history, philosophy and film studies in Frankfurt/Main and Basel. After almost 20 years in film studies, she has been working since 2010 as a freelance curator, author and film researcher at the interface between cinema, art and theory, mostly in collaborative constellations, and sparring partner in the material research, material development and form-finding of emerging film projects.

Gutberlet curated (with Kathrin Brinckmann and Gaby Babić) the experimental film series reel to real from 2003 to 2013 in Frankfurt, in 2012 the exhibitions Shoe Shop in Johannesburg (with Cara Snyman) and 2013/2014 The Space Between Us in Berlin and Stuttgart on artistic perspectives on mobility and the German-African present. In 2013-2015, together with Tobias Hering, she was the artistic director of the film archival project Visionary Archive (Arsenal - Institut für Film und Videokunst e.V.) with public stations in Berlin, Bissau, Johannesburg, Cairo and Khartoum. She initiated the festival and exhibition project Cours, cours, camarade, le vieux monde est derrière toi-The Cinema of Med Hondo (Berlin 2017-2019; with Brigitta Kuster and Enoka Ayemba) and is co-editor of the resulting and three-volume publication.

With Annett Busch (Berlin and Trondheim) she has been developing different formats since 2017 in the project Women on Aeroplanes with stops in Berlin, Lagos, Bayreuth, London, Warsaw, Frankfurt/Main, Johannesburg, Kigali, Oberhausen. Parallel to the project work, Marie-Hélène Gutberlet taught film history and film theory (Film Academy Baden-Württemberg, Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts, University of Frankfurt, University of Braunschweig, among others) and works as a supervisor of artistic research projects (Film Academy Baden-Württemberg, NTNU Trondheim).

Gutberlet has been a member of the international jury at Akademie Schloss Solitude since 2019.

From 2019 to 2020, she was a substitute professor for film at the HfG Offenbach. Since winter semester 2020 she is professor for film.
